Poison ivy, oak and sumac all contain the same gum or "resin" known as rhus. This gum is typically not noticeable when it gets onto the skin. Areas of the skin that do come in contact with the resin ultimately break out in a red, itchy, blistery rash, often seen in streaks. This streak formation approximates where branches or leaves have lain across the skin. Where the largest concentration of the resin contacts the skin, the rash breaks out first and is typically the worst in severity.
