10 Top Urban Skin Myths
There seems to be no shortage of urban myths out there regarding skin care. I thought I would clear up some of this misinformation for all of you who have been kind enough to keep me updated.
Tanning your skin in preparation for those winter tropical trips is NOT a good idea! You damage your skin as much as if you get burned on the beach.
Chocolate does NOT cause acne.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is an irritant, NOT a carcinogen.
AHAs may cause irritation, NOT advance the aging process. AHAs also do NOT cause skin cancer.
Retin A and Renova do NOT cause skin cancer.
Facial Exercises may worsen deep facial expression wrinkle lines. Think about it; fine wrinkles are due to a loss of collagen which are completely unrelated to muscle. Thickening the muscles of expression (think frown lines for instance) WORSENS the deeper wrinkles. That's why we use Botox!
Accutane does NOT cause future problems with pregnancy, only during treatment and for 30 days after stopping the medication. And ONLY in women.
Waterproof sunscreen can make you go blind. Where do these stories come from?
Carmex, a cold-sore and chapped-lip ointment is NOT addictive. Whether it is useful or not is a different issue, but it is most definitely not a contributing factor to an addiction.
Antiperspirants with aluminum do NOT cause breast cancer. This is one of the most widely disseminated myths out there, directly aimed at women's understandable concerns about this
deadly disease. The American Cancer Society, the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and other major organizations have come out to denounce this lie.
I hope you have had fun reading these as well as learning something new. Thank you for taking the time to read my newsletter.
