Diverticulosis
|
|
|
Gastroenterology:
In diverticulosis, small pouches bulge outward at weak spots in the lining
of the intestines. These pouches, called diverticula, are about the size
of large peas and usually occur in the colon or large intestine, though
they can occasionally affect the small intestine.
A lack of fiber in the diet is thought to cause diverticulosis. People who
suffer from constipation can strain their abdominal muscles, causing
increased pressure on the colon. This excess pressure causes the weak
spots in the colon to bulge out and become diverticula.
Some 10 to 25% of diverticulosis cases develop into diverticulitis, which
occurs when the pouches become inflamed. Diverticular disease is usually a
benign condition, although potential complications include infection (from
stool or bacteria getting caught in the diverticula), perforations,
blockages or bleeding.
Risk factors include a life-long diet low in fiber, aging, smoking, immune
system suppression, and a variety of hereditary diseases, including
schleroderma, polycystic kidney disease, Marfan's and Ehlers-Danolos
Syndrome. Exercise may help protect people against diverticulosis.
Diverticulosis affects more women than men and becomes more common with
increasing age. Treatment, which usually consists of dietary and lifestyle
changes and medication, focuses on resolving infection and inflammation,
resting the colon, and preventing or reducing complications. Surgery is
rarely necessary (fewer than 10% of cases), and current innovations
include the possibility of laparoscopic surgery.
